Vishakha Committee

A COMMITTEE AGAINST SEXUAL HARASSMENT OF WOMEN AT WORK-PLACE

The Vishakha Committee at VMV Commerce, JMT Arts and JMT Science College, Nagpur, is an essential body established in accordance with the guidelines laid out by the Supreme Court of India in the landmark Vishaka case of 1997. This committee is dedicated to preventing and addressing cases of sexual harassment within the institution, ensuring a safe and respectful environment for all students, staff, and faculty members.

Purpose:
The primary purpose of the Vishakha Committee is to uphold the dignity and rights of individuals by providing a structured mechanism to address complaints of sexual harassment. The committee works proactively to create awareness about sexual harassment, promote gender equality, and ensure that the college is a safe space for everyone.
Objectives
The objective of the Vishakha Committee is to protect women against sexual harassment in the workplace and ensure the maintenance of fundamental rights such as equality, the right to life, and the right to live with dignity. The committee is dedicated to upholding a safe environment free from sexual harassment and safeguarding human rights in accordance with the “Vishakha Guidelines.”

Sexual harassment includes, but is not limited to, the following unwelcome behaviours, whether explicit or implicit:
o Physical contact and advances
o A demand or request for sexual favours
o Sexually coloured remarks
o Displaying pornography
o Any other unwelcome physical, verbal, or non-verbal conduct of a sexual nature Women employees are encouraged to file complaints for redressal, with the assurance that their identities will be kept confidential. Complaints will be addressed within a specified timeframe.
If the accused is found guilty following an inquiry, they will face consequences in accordance with the Indian Penal Code or other applicable laws and will be subject to disciplinary action as per the institution’s service rules.

Roles & Responsibilities:
o Prevention: Organizing workshops, seminars, and awareness programs to educate the college community about sexual harassment, gender sensitivity, and the legal rights of individuals.
o Redressal: Promptly addressing complaints of sexual harassment through a fair and confidential process, ensuring that grievances are resolved within a stipulated time frame.
o Support: Offering counselling and support services to victims of sexual harassment, ensuring their well-being and safety throughout the process.
o Compliance: Ensuring that the college complies with legal and regulatory requirements regarding the prevention of sexual harassment and maintaining records of complaints and actions taken.
o Monitoring: Regularly reviewing policies and procedures related to sexual harassment and making necessary recommendations to the college administration for improvements.
o Members List: The Vishaka Committee comprises members committed to upholding the values of justice, equality, and safety. The committee includes representatives from different college sections, ensuring a diverse and balanced perspective in handling sensitive matters.
